The UTEP Women's Soccer Team won their home opener last night by a score of 3-1 over Texas State. The thorough victory by the Miners on Wednesday night was a promising sign of things to come from this talented team.
Here are some of the thoughts that I came away with after this team's first victory at home.
1) The rust was expected. I wouldn't call it so much rust, as "possible nerves" for their home opener. The first 10 minutes of the game were a little imprecise for UTEP, but that went away as the game progressed.
2)Defensive line was solid. The coverage by the defensive 4 for UTEP was very good for 90 minutes. They double team quickly and adjust to cover for open spaces very quickly. They adjusted their defensive positions just about as good as I have seen in a long time.
3)This team listens. Adjustments made by head coach Kevin Cross and his staff came to fruition on the field of play and it was evident by this team's performance last night. UTEP gradually got better as time progressed with the adjustments that were made. It will be interesting to see how this team improves for this coming Sunday's game against Army with a couple of days of discussing what coach Cross did not like about Wednesday's game.
4)Azia Nicholson, solid as pre-usual. She takes the ball away, sets the rythm for the ensuing attack, and knows where to distribute the ball. Before the game, coach Cross told me that Azia is the player that covers the most area in the field of play and he wasn't kidding.
5)Last but not least. 805 fans for a soccer game at University Field was great. Won't be long till its over one-thousand a game, no doubt.
That's a good thing for them , it just really shows their eagerness to win and their efforts are just being rewarded. :)
