Socorro workshop
Trustees with the Socorro Independent School District Tuesday postponed discussion about the goals and evaluation process for the superintendent.
While no action was scheduled, the item was on the agenda for a board workshop Tuesday.
After initially being told that the workshop, which also dealt with board and district goals, was closed to the public, I was allowed to stay for some of the discussions.
As soon as the meeting began, the board voted to move the discussion on the superintendent’s goals and evaluation process into closed session, citing personnel issues.
Since the meeting was running long, the discussion was postponed for an unspecified date later this summer, trustees said.
When questioned about why the goals of the superintendent were not discussed in open session, Trustee Craig Patton said much of the discussion may address performance issues that cannot legally be disclosed in public.
“Typically, if you are talking about purely goals, goals for the superintendent to attain in future, that is great, we can talk about that in open session but I think sometimes intermingled or mixed in with all that discussion we do talk about current performance, past performance and issues like that that come up,” Patton said. “That is when it gets into the personnel arena and that’s why they talked about doing that part in closed session.”
