EPPD hosts motorcyle safety courses

In light of a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday that took the life of a Fort Bliss soldier, El Paso police are reminding the public of their motorcycle safety classes.

The next classes have been scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 19, April 16, May 21 and June 18 at Edge Kawasaki, 10310 Montana.

The courses are free and open to the public.

 To sign up for the class, call Margaret Petrozza, the El Paso Police Department’s Traffic Safety Coordinator, at 564-7352, or Edge Kawasaki at 593-1024.

LC firefighters, police take to the ice for charity

From a Las Cruces Police Department press release:

Three Las Cruces police officers and two LCFD firefighters will participate in an amateur hockey tournament that benefits the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research.
 
The tournament begins Friday, Feb. 25, following the El Paso Rhinos hockey game, and runs through Sunday. All games are played at the Sierra Providence Center located near the El Paso County Coliseum at 4100 Paisano.
 
LCPD officers participating in the games will be Lt. Kerry Clements, Sgt. Roy Askins and Sgt. Kevin Renn. LCFD firefighters who are participating are Battalion Chief Bruce Brinkerhoff and Lt. Charles “Chuck” MacGregor.
 
The Las Cruces firefighters are playing alongside firefighters from other area departments. The firefighters will play following the Rhinos game at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday. The Las Cruces police officers, competing with officers from other law enforcement agencies in the border region, will take the ice following Saturday’s Rhinos game.
 
Law enforcement personnel from regional federal agencies make up the third team participating in the tourney.
 
The El Paso Rhinos host Boulder this weekend. Their games begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The amateur games will be played following each Rhinos game.
 
A portion of each ticket sold to the Rhinos game will benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
 
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research through various events across the globe. Foundation volunteers are known to shave their heads in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment.

LC man charged with kidnapping, battery

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly battered a man and confined the victim to his own apartment for two days.

William Anthony Karels, 24, was charged with one count each of kidnapping, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and contempt of court.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, an individual called police to report their suspicion that a man was being physically abused and held against his will at 800 E. Foster Road. Officers responded and knocked on the door for quite some time before finally being met by the 48-year-old victim, who came to the door in noticeable pain.

Police sergeant arrested in police brutality case after teen sprayed in jail

DONNA — A Donna police sergeant who allegedly fired pepper spray on a 17-year-old jail inmate last week was arrested on brutality charges by Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies Monday evening.

The alleged attack on  Donna High School student Jonathan Morales occurred at the city police department’s holding cell last week.

Surveillance footage shows the sergeant spraying the teen in the face with pepper spray and leaving him “there to fend off for himself,” Treviño said.

Las Cruces police seek tips in weekend robbery

Crime Stoppers of Las Cruces is looking for the public's help in finding two men who robbed a fast food restaurant Saturday night.
Las Cruces police said two men, both armed with handguns, took an undisclosed amount of money from the Blake's Lotaburger at 1300 S. Valley just after 10 p.m. Saturday. Police said the suspects ordered two of the restaurant's employees to the floor while a third employee was ordered to hand over the restaurant's money. The robbers then ran out of the store towards the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Valley Drive.
Witnesses described the robbers as either black or Hispanic. One was wearing a white T-shirt and a white mask, either a ski mask or a "Friday the 13th"-style mask. The second man was wearing a blue or black hoodie. Both were carrying stainless steel, semi-automatic handguns.
Crime Stoppers of Las Cruces is offering a $1,000 to the person whose tip leads to the arrest of the two suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-222-8477 or send a tip via text message to 528477 (LCTIPS). Tipsters will remain anonymous.

El Paso Police say officers broke up a burglary ring after a traffic stop.

Early Friday, police officers stopped a car driven by Hector Juan Marrero, 19. The officers observed some items inside the vehicle and became suspicious, police said.

EL PASO -- El Paso police are investigating a possible murder/suicide in East El Paso.

Two people were discovered dead at a home on Wexford Drive at about 11 p.m. Monday, police said.
