Democratic state Rep. Pete Gallego, who is running for a U.S. congressional seat representing a portion of El Paso, is calling on Republican incumbent Francisco "Quico" Canseco to release the full guest list of lobbyists and special interest groups who attended a fundraiser at a South Florida resort last week.
A report from CBS News, through hidden cameras, revealed that Canseco was among about a dozen Republican freshmen who attended a private fundraiser at the exclusive sea side Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla. The price of attending one happy hour event with the lawmakers left special interest groups reaching into their wallets for $10,000, according to the CBS News report.
“The question is who was at the event, what did they get for their money, and what did Congressman Canseco promise them?," Lonny Paris, Gallego's campaign manager, said in a statement. "He should release the guest list of special interests at this event. The longer he waits, the clearer it becomes that Canseco is protecting these special interests - leaving middle class families and seniors behind. These special interests have become the highest bidders for his attention."
Update: Canseco's campaign responded with the statement below.
“Pete Gallego has a long history of accepting PAC donations including from labor unions, trial lawyers, and other left-wing interests that have tried to harm the Texas economy," Valentina Weis, a spokeswoman for Canseco, said in an email. "Just as Gallego’s donations from a recent Washington D.C. fundraising event will be public in the next Federal Elections Commission report on April 15th, so too will Congressman Canseco’s.”
