Gov. Rick Perry sounded some familiar themes in a speech today at the National Council of La Raza conference in San Antonio.
Some of the governor's remarks were aimed at appealing to nearly 2,000 audience members who sat waiting to hear about his positions on immigration reform, Arizona's controversial law and raising the quality of life for Latinos.
After hitting his typical points by touting job creation and the state's economic standing, Perry briefly touched on the new Arizona law that has been criticized by some who say it encourages racial profiling and discrimination.
He said the law "may be right for Arizona but it ain't exactly right for Texas."
The comment drew applause from attendees though Perry did not specifically say what part of the law was not "exactly right" for the state. He also did not make any promises to veto similar legislation in the state.
Perry repeated his criticism of the federal government's approach to border security. He said Texas has invested in keeping its residents safe from spillover violence because the federal government failed in its duty.
And, he said, the federal government's failure to secure the border is the reason states like Arizona have taken on immigration policy.
"Until America secures the border, a rational debate on immigration policy is not going to happen," Perry said
The governor talked about the state's business climate and economic achievements in recent years, and he seemed to take a jab at his Democratic opponent Bill White.
"This isn't rocket science," Perry said. "When it comes to keeping this state going and keeping the economy of Texas happening, you don't have to have a degree in economics or a degree in public policy from, what is it, Harvard."
White, who will speak to the group Monday, graduated from Harvard University with a degree in economics before earning his law degree at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ah, yes, the usual pandering from Governor Good Hair. He will say and do anything to get re-elected. Don't believe a word he says. It certainly doesn't HURT to have a degree in economics from Harvard and a law degree from UT Austin. What are Perry's educational credentials? Humm???

Any politician that would give La Raza the time of day won't get my vote.

I do think it's a shame that the governor of my state met with a racist and bigoted group like the National Council of La Raza.

Rob thanks for not voting for Perry. Jennifer STFU!

Two..
I agree 100% w/ Jennifer...La Raza IS a racist and bigoted group.
Whats the problem two? you don't like when people express their opinions about something it appears you support?
Supporting La Raza is like supporting the KKK or the Black Panthers..those groups exist to spread racism and hate for those that do not look like they do.
Why would anyone support groups like that?
Let it be clear, I do not support ANY organization that identifies itself with a particular race.

Rob your statement is based on what? that any group that has a name falls into the same category?!
How in the world can you declare that KKK and the Black Panthers are in the same category as NCLR?! Does NCLR burn Crosses and throw bricks in peoples houses does NCLR have meetings to take over this country at gun point!?!
NCLR has white black yellow red and brown faces as its membership. So for you to sit there make a claim that they are racist and bigots.
Let me be clear to you and any further comment... As much as I don't like Gov. Perry and Governors past I can say one thing about him he is not stupid and has kept promise to making Texas a great state. No American leader at a high level in government would in their right mind attend a national conference that is Racist and Bigoted.
When was the last time any half trusted American leader spoke at a KKK rally or Black Panther gathering?!
So to all the Rob's and Jennifer's STFU!!!

"Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada"
If you don't understand why this philosophy is racist and bigoted, then you are both.
Posted by: Jennifer | July 12, 2010 at 11:01 PM
Jennifer your quote "Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada" is from MEChA and not NCLR.
NCLR Denounce the statement "Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada" [“For the race everything, outside the race nothing”] as repugnant, racist, and totally incompatible with American society or citizenship.
So please before you comment, do some research and stop spreading lies and creating false Identities that can lead to defamation of a legitimate organization or person.
We are all entitled to our opinions and comments. So be very careful about with what you write or falsely comment.

Rick Please Texas Man up! Go back and see how few votes you have always received from South Texas and the Valley.. you just get big money from there! Get your people to do the research! I realize that many of your high dollar givers depend on illegals to up their bottom dollar but let's get the immigrants in Texas LEGALLY so they make decent salaries, pay taxes and are able to live above slave standards.
Listen to the people that have been with you since you first ran for State Rep on Haskel County! Those that came on board for the Ag Comm campaign, which remember Farmers can get immigrants special work cards for the crops LEGALLY and most do. Then there were those that joined you as Lt. Governor...and then the big dollars that have sucked up to you since you hit the big times Governors office! Please do not be a Washingonite and not listen to us!

Perry is counting on the "lesser of two evils" theory to beat Sanctuary City Bill White; of course the same theory worked pretty well for McCain during the last Presidential election.

Seems both candidates are addressing this pity party racially biased group that already received more medicaid, food stamp and medical benefits in addition to preference in contracting bids, education assistance, ignorance of laws and enforcement of immigration rules than any other group has ever known. How are they going to feel when Obama lets in all the aid carrying Africans for free health care and the muslims giving birth in all the hotels across America now...Appeal the 14th Amendment...no more racial preferences...

Apparently Gov. Perry's answer for problems in Texas is to wait for the Fed Government to fix them while he preaches State's Rights???!!!
Wow...Yes We Can

La Raza is an open borders, pro amnesty group. They are racist and the very fact that Governor Perry spoke at their gathering lend credibility and legitimacy to the group. One should research the history of La Raza and its members before coming to any conclusions. Not their public statements put on their website for the benefit of their public sponsors but the real polcies and actions of La Raza. A former high ranking member of La Raza was interviewed by Rhonda Deniston on the Rick Amato show and he revealed that indeed La Raza was and continues to be very anti American and pro open borders. If you seriously want to see what the amnesty leadership thinks about Americans, I invite you to go to http://www.noimmigrationamnesty.com

In 2001, Texas became the first state in the country to pass an in-state tuition law. The law, signed by Governor Rick Perry, created a national movement. Many private universities also now award aid to illegal immigrant students.Rick Perry also appointed the first hispanic woman to the Texas Supreme Court. Rick Perry is a very hispanic-friendly Governor.
