Taking a walking tour around the Capitol and getting press credentials for the upcoming session, I saw some things of note today, the day after San Antonio Republican state Rep. Joe Straus became the presumed House speaker.
Former House parliamentarian Denise Davis was walking around the Reagan Building at the Capitol complex. Could she be coming back to replace the controversial parliamentarian and former state Rep. Terry Keel, who stepped in when Davis abruptly resigned at the end of the 2007 legislative session? (Relive the history of those days here.)
Soon-to-be-former House Speaker Tom Craddick was walking down the hall outside of his apartment behind the House chamber. He stopped only long enough to say hello and that he was doing fine and then quickly got on an elevator. He looked relaxed, though, no tie or jacket, and he even shared a smile.
Peering briefly into the House speaker's office, it looked like Craddick may have started the moving process. A couple of wall hangings were leaning against a desk. There's only a week before the legislative session starts and a new speaker moves in.
